Pansycake
/PAN-see-kayk/ noun (insult)
≈ “Coward / Wimp”
A Dauntless insult meaning coward, combining 'pansy' with 'cake' (as in 'piece of cake' — too easy). Uriah tries to revive it as slang, annoying everyone around him.
“Don't be such a pansycake.”— Uriah Pedrad
Etymology
An older Dauntless insult that fell out of fashion. Uriah's attempt to bring it back is played for comedy — everyone groans when he says it. It's a meta-joke about how invented slang can feel forced.
Usage History
Used in Insurgent (2012). Notable as an in-universe example of failed slang revival — even the characters think it sounds stupid.
Taboo Trajectory
Intentionally corny. Roth used 'pansycake' to show that not all invented words land. It's more cringe than cutting within the story itself.
Semantic Drift Timeline
Uriah keeps trying to make 'pansycake' happen throughout Insurgent. It never catches on. This is itself a commentary on how slang works.
Regional Notes
Dauntless compound, but archaic. Uriah is the only one who uses it.
