Shol'va
/SHOL-vah/ noun (slur/insult)
≈ “Traitor / Heretic”
A Goa'uld term meaning 'traitor,' specifically one who betrays the false gods. Applied to Teal'c after he defects to the SGC.
“Shol'va! You will die for your betrayal!”— Apophis, various Goa'uld and Jaffa
Etymology
In the Goa'uld language. Since the Goa'uld present themselves as gods, betrayal is simultaneously treason and heresy. The word carries both political and religious weight.
Usage History
Used throughout Stargate SG-1's ten seasons. Primarily directed at Teal'c. Central to the show's themes of liberation from false gods.
Taboo Trajectory
Carries the maximum weight of both political and religious betrayal. In a theocratic society, there's nothing worse.
Semantic Drift Timeline
Initially directed at Teal'c specifically. As more Jaffa rebel, the term becomes more broadly applied but loses none of its venom.
Regional Notes
Used throughout the Goa'uld Empire. All Jaffa understand it.
