Shuck
/SHUK/ verb/adjective/interjection
≈ “Fuck / Shit”
The Gladers' primary expletive, replacing both the F-word and the S-word. Used in 'shuck-face' (insult), 'shucking' (adjective), and as a standalone exclamation.
“What the shuck are you doing, you shuck-face?”— Thomas (Dylan O'Brien), various Gladers
Etymology
Created by the Gladers — teenagers with wiped memories trapped in the Maze. Having lost their original language memories, they developed new profanity. 'Shuck' may derive from 'shucking' (removing corn husks — tedious, frustrating work).
Usage History
Used throughout The Maze Runner trilogy (2009-2016) and the film series (2014-2018). The YA target audience made invented profanity necessary.
Taboo Trajectory
Strong within the Glader community. As a YA series, the invented profanity lets characters express genuine fury without alienating younger readers or triggering rating concerns.
Semantic Drift Timeline
Consistent throughout the book trilogy and film series. Part of the Glader slang system that also includes 'klunk' (shit), 'shank' (person), and 'slim it' (calm down).
Regional Notes
Used exclusively within the Glade and by escaped Gladers.
