Etymology

From 'stiff' as in rigid and uptight. Abnegation members wear plain gray clothes, eat simple food, and deny themselves pleasure. To the thrill-seeking Dauntless, they're impossibly repressed — hence 'Stiff.'

Usage History

Used throughout the Divergent trilogy (2011-2013) and films (2014-2016). The most recognizable piece of faction-specific slang from the series.

Taboo Trajectory

Functions as a caste slur within the faction system. Not the strongest insult but carries real social weight — it tells someone they're in the wrong place and should go back where they came from.

Semantic Drift Timeline

Used throughout the Divergent trilogy. Tris (born Abnegation, transferred to Dauntless) is called 'Stiff' as a way to remind her she doesn't belong.

Regional Notes

Used primarily by Dauntless members. Other factions may use it but less frequently.
